Notary Training Opportunities
Starting July 1, 2010 all new notaries and certain * renewing notaries will be required to satisfactorily complete a certified training class prior to applying for a commission. During the hearings on Senate Bill 299, Secretary of State Linda McCulloch committed to the members of the Montana Legislature that she would institute programs to expand the training opportunities available to prospective and current notaries.
While training is not required for currently commissioned Montana notaries in good standing, we have found that those who have attended a class or taken online training have found the information to be very valuable and worthwhile and we encourage you to take advantage of such courses if possible.
The Secretary of State’s Office is pleased to introduce the new online program for Montana notaries public. This eLearning opportunity is designed exclusively for Montana notary applicants, and fulfills the training requirements for all new applicants. It is also an excellent review for current notaries. There is no charge for this course. The Notary & Certifications Division of the Secretary of State’s Office also offers live classes around the state.
In addition private organizations have been encouraged to have their notary training classes certified and made available to prospective notaries. Secretary McCulloch has certified the following private entities to offer training courses that will fulfill the training requirements for new notary applicants:
* Current notaries who do not submit their paperwork for reappointment within the statutorily allowed time period (30 days before or 30 days after the expiration date of their current commission), and those who have been notified by the Secretary of State’s office that they must complete a certified training course as a condition of re-appointment are included in this category.
