How to Renew Your Commission: Reappointment

One of the most frequently asked questions for the notary section of the Secretary of State’s Office is: “How do I renew my commission?” With the implementation of the new law on July 1, 2010, the renewal process is somewhat different, although not dramatically. The most important thing to know is that the timeframe for applying for a reappointment as a notary public is more critical than ever: You must submit the required paperwork no more than thirty days prior to your current commission expiration date or thirty days after your current commission expires.

If you miss the deadline, you will be considered a new applicant and must complete a training course prior to submitting the paperwork. It is important to understand that submissions that are incomplete or inaccurate cannot be processed, and could result in the deadline being missed.

While the specific details and forms may change from time to time, the basic requirements remain the same:

  • Carefully read and follow the instructions and complete the application form required for a reappointment.

  • Contact your bonding agency to renew your surety bond.

  • Be sure to sign the surety bond (on the line for “Principal”).

  • Send all the original documents, together with the filing fee, to:

You may not renew your commission more than thirty (30) days prior to the expiration date of your current commission.

If you wish to keep the same month and day for your commission anniversary date, you must submit your application, bond and filing fee within 30 days before or after your current expiration date.
