Press Release

Treasured Artists of Montana

Secretary of State Linda McCulloch is providing Montana artists the opportunity to display their work in the lobby of the Secretary of State’s office in the historic Capitol building in Helena. The exhibit will be rotated throughout the year in order to give artists from all over the state this special opportunity. The Secretary of State encourages the public to visit our office and view the “Treasured” Montana Artist Exhibit at their leisure.

Sue Smith: Artist Statement

“My interest in and love for ghost towns began a long time ago. I’ve visited Virginia City, Nevada City, Elkhorn, Comet, Garnet, Pony, Bannack, and Coolidge.

I’m drawn to the old wood and the log buildings with chinking. The various types of architecture, the fact that the buildings have lasted as long as they have, and the little "treasures" - like old newspapers that were used as insulation still clinging to the walls - continue to fascinate me.

Part of my photographic journey is to learn more about the towns and the people who lived in them. I look forward to traveling and researching the history of each town while documenting my excursions with photographs. I have a list of "must sees" and I’m sure it will grow as I continue to explore our Montana mining history.”
