Secretary of State Linda McCulloch Unveils
“Treasured” Montana Artist: Kathryn Fehlig of Helena

HELENA, MT – Secretary of State Linda McCulloch is pleased to introduce Kathryn Fehlig, of Helena, as the next “Treasured” Montana Artist. Fehlig is a painter who found her inspiration for painting landscapes while spending time in the great Montana outdoors.

Secretary of State Linda McCulloch with "Treasured Artist" Kathryn Fehlig“Kathryn is a Montana native whose ability to capture the beauty and essence of Big Sky County is a unique gift, and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to share her work with the public,” Secretary McCulloch said.  “Her art takes you on a journey throughout Montana, with illustrations ranging from an afternoon stroll along Spring Meadow Lake to a captivating sunset over the Buffalo Jump outside of Ulm.”

Fehlig’s exhibit features pastel illustrations in which she captures the colors and spirit of the environment by painting in “plein air”, a technique which uses natural light.  Her pieces have been featured in art shows across the nation and many have won top awards including “Best in Show” at the Appalachian Pastel Society in Ashville, North Carolina. She also spent eight years as a graphic designer for the Montana Historical Society helping to produce its quarterly magazine and popular “Western Rendezvous of Art” catalogs.

“Montana is the perfect marriage of artist and environment,” Fehlig said. “What luck, living in Montana. I’ll never run out of the things to paint.  The pieces I’ve chosen to share are a representation of the diversity and splendor of the place we proudly call home.”

“I launched this exhibit to showcase artists like Kathryn,” Secretary McCulloch said. “It is my pleasure to welcome her to the Capitol as the first “Treasured” Montana Artist” of the year.”

Kathryn Fehlig’s exhibit will be on display January through April 2013 in the front lobby of the Secretary of State’s Office, which is located in the State Capitol Building in Helena. It is available at no cost to the public. Past and present “Treasured” Montana Artist exhibits are featured in an online gallery at sos.mt.gov/Gallery.
