(HELENA) - The 2010 election cycle kicks off next week with the start of candidate filing, and Secretary of State Linda McCulloch is working to ensure Montanans are prepared.

"Our website is a great tool for voters and candidates," Secretary McCulloch said. "The online services include a fillable voter registration card, candidate filing, absentee ballot request forms, and a voter registration and polling place look-up service. I encourage folks to check it out."

CANDIDATE INFORMATION

The first day to file for any public office is Thursday, January 14, 2010. The final day to file is Monday, March 15, 2010. Filing forms must be received between 8:00 a.m. on January 14 and 5:00 p.m. on March 15. Forms postmarked by the deadline, but not received by the deadline, cannot be accepted. Candidates may file electronically via the Secretary of State's online candidate filing service, in person at the Secretary of State's office, by mail, or by facsimile. Additional information about candidate filing, including filing fees and forms, is available on the Secretary of State's website at sos.mt.gov/Elections.

VOTER INFORMATION

Montana voters may vote in person at the polls or by absentee ballot for each of the 2010 statewide elections. They may register to vote during the regular registration period or they may take advantage of Montana's late registration period, which runs from 29 days before the election until the close of polls on Election Day. Montana voters may fill out a voter registration card, check their voter registration status, or access the form to request an absentee ballot on the Secretary of State's website at sos.mt.gov/Elections.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Montana will hold the statewide Primary Nominating Election on June 8, 2010. The statewide Federal General Election will be held November 2, 2010. A list of open offices is available on the Secretary of State's website at sos.mt.gov/Elections.

"My staff and I are eager to engage folks in the elections process. Voting and running for public office are two of our most fundamental rights as citizens of this great state," Secretary McCulloch said.
