Carolyn Barton
2010 Montana Notary of the Year

KALISPELL - Secretary of State Linda McCulloch is pleased to announce that Carolyn Barton from Glacier Bank in Kalispell, Montana has been selected as the 2010 Montana Notary of the Year. By virtue of this award, Barton will be nominated for the National Notary of the Year award given annually by the National Notary Association.

“Carolyn Barton has been a notary for more than 25 years,” said Secretary McCulloch.  “She was chosen from a strong field of nominees for demonstrating exceptional services and high standards of practice.”

“It’s humbling and gratifying to be selected as the Montana Notary of the Year,” Barton said. “I always strive to fulfill my duties in a professional manner, and I want to thank Secretary of State Linda McCulloch for this award and for the support her office provides to all Montana notaries. I also want to thank Glacier Bank and my co-workers for all their support and professionalism.”

Secretary McCulloch launched the Montana Notary of the Year award in 2009 to raise the visibility of the invaluable work done by notaries in Montana.

Riley Johnson, the Montana State Director for the National Federation of Independent Business, joined notary staff from the Office of the Secretary of State to evaluate and review each nominee based on five criteria of excellence.

Nominees were evaluated in the following areas:

  • Longevity
  • Variety of documents notarized
  • Use of notary journal before October 1, 2009
  • Community Service
  • Exceptional Notary Service

“Carolyn Barton is one of many notaries public who help to protect Montanans from fraud and forgery,” Secretary McCulloch said. “She determines the identity of the person who signs a document, swears an oath, or performs any of the other acts that require a notary. She also goes above and beyond the call of duty by holding training sessions for Glacier Bank employees as the only individual in Montana who has been certified by our office as a notary trainer. It is my pleasure to honor Carolyn Barton as the 2010 Montana Notary of the Year.”
