Happy Statewide Election Year!  We're wasting no time as we officially kickoff the season this week with the start of Candidate Filing on January 9.

It will be another busy season, with state and federal offices on the ballot alongside a growing number of ballot issues.  I'm pleased to announce that we're ready!  Are you?

If you haven't visited our website in a while, I encourage you to check it out. Candidates and voters will find everything they need to get involved in 2014! Montana is better served when folks from all over the state participate in elections - so make sure you register to vote and cast your ballots this year!

2014 Federal Elections

Mark your calendars for the 2014 Primary and General Elections!

June 3rd Primary Election, November 4th General Election

Start the year off right by making a commitment to vote in every election in which you are eligible. You can get started by registering to vote, filling out an Absentee List Application, or checking the accuracy of your existing voter registration with our online/mobile App, My Voter Page

Have you moved or changed your name?  It's important to keep your information current by filling out a new Voter Registration Application or Absentee List Application and submitting it to the county election office.

Absentee Voters

You've Got Mail

This month, county election administrators will be mailing address confirmation cards to every voter on the Absentee List.

In order to receive your absentee ballots in 2014, you must complete the confirmation form, sign it, and return it to your county election administrator.  If you've voluntarily or involuntarily been removed from the Absentee List, and would like to receive an absentee ballot for the Primary and General Elections, you must fill out and return an Application for Absentee Ballot or sign up for the Absentee List.

Absentee ballots are mailed to all eligible voters 30 days before Election Day.  Any registered voter may choose to vote by absentee ballot.

Candidate Filing

Interested in running for office?  Don't forget to file with the Secretary of State!Candidate Filing

Candidate filing opens January 9 and closes March 10. The deadline is extended to June 2 for all Independent, Minor Party, or Indigent candidates. Qualifications and filing fees vary by seat, as do the signature requirements for certain candidates. Candidate filing is available online, in person, by mail or by fax.

Due to the Redistricting Plan adopted by the 2013 Legislature, all legislative candidates are encouraged to carefully check the newly drawn House and Senate boundaries to determine their eligibility.

It's important to note that write-in candidates are required to file for office and pay the applicable filing fee in order to be eligible for the election. In the rare case where no candidate files for an open office, county election administrators will tally the votes for all names written on the ballot.

Visit us online for more detailed candidate filing information. Campaign finance and practice questions should be directed to the Commissioner of Political Practices at 406.444.2942.

Military and Overseas Citizens Voters

The Secretary of State's Electronic Absentee System (EAS) makes registering to vote, obtaining, returning and tracking absentee ballots easier for members of the armed forces, their families and overseas U.S. citizens who are absent from their Montana voting residence

The EAS is available 45 days before each statewide election. Find out if you're eligible!
