HELENA – Secretary of State Linda McCulloch today welcomed the 2009 Girls State Legislature to the State Capitol in Helena. In an inspiring speech, McCulloch encouraged the student body to continue learning about government, elections and citizenship. She reminded the all-female audience that participation in the political process fuels democracy and ultimately, our nation’s success.
“I’m confident these young women will help lead Montana’s future generations. They have taken the initiative to further their education and to learn firsthand how their state and local governments are run,” said McCulloch.
Girls State is a national summer leadership program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary for high school juniors and seniors. Program participants enjoy mock elections and a mock legislative session among other civic engagements.
