More Counties Receive Federal HAVA Money
Ravalli and Jefferson

HELENA – Secretary of State Linda McCulloch recently awarded the following federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) grants:

• Ravalli County = $1,472 security grant
• Jefferson County = $5,000 polling place grant

“While the money helps elections offices cover a portion of the additional costs accrued under HAVA, more money is needed at both the state and the county level to properly fund Montana’s elections,” says McCulloch.

Under the Help America Vote Act, security grants must be used to protect and secure county ballots and voting equipment. The polling place grants must be used to improve accessibility at the polls, including temporary and permanent modifications.

So far in 2009, Secretary McCulloch has approved nearly $106,000 in similar grants to 18 counties in Montana. For more information about the federal Help America Vote Act, logon to the Secretary of State’s website at: http://sos.mt.gov/Elections.
