The Montana Secretary of State’s office accepts cash, checks, money orders and all major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Debit cards with the Visa or MasterCard logo are also accepted.
Credit card payments are only accepted through SIMS (BE) online and in-person. To protect your financial information, the Montana Secretary of State’s office does not accept payment information via fax, email or telephone.
If your credit card is valid and your transaction declines, please contact your card-issuing company for more information.
Mont. Code Ann. § 2-6-103 (4) states fees must be collected in advance and when collected by the Secretary of State, are not refundable. Therefore, the Montana Secretary of State’s office will only refund your payments under the following circumstances:
- If you believe you were given incorrect information by us and subsequently fail to meet a timeframe, or
- If we have made a mistake when processing a document.
Please be careful when completing a process as we cannot give refunds if you change your mind after having paid an application fee.
If the Montana Secretary of State’s office grants a refund, the following documentation needs to be received by our office for the refund process to be initiated:
- A written letter requesting a refund. We can no longer process a refund based upon a phone call.
- Completed and signed W-9
Print Your Receipt
If you filed paper documents, you will need to contact our office at (406)444-3665 to request a copy of your receipt.
If you filed your documents electronically, you can retrieve your receipt from the email that was generated or navigate online to business entity and print from the activity tab for that specific document.
